How to Replace a Pool Liner

Jun 17, 2024

Considering replacing your vinyl pool liner? Over time, every vinyl-lined pool will need a new liner. As the vinyl material ages, it can dry out and deteriorate, leading to cracks and tears that can cause larger problems beyond just being an eyesore. Replacing the liner yourself can save you a significant amount of money compared to professional installation. Blue Lagoon Pools is here to guide you through the process.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Pool Liner?

Minor leaks and tears can often be repaired using a vinyl liner patch kit. However, as the liner ages, it may become brittle and prone to cracking and tearing. Most vinyl liners last about 10–15 years with proper care. If you notice excessive water loss, faded colors, or significant wear and tear, it might be time to replace the liner.

When is the Best Time to Replace a Pool Liner?

The best time to replace a vinyl pool liner is in the fall or early spring, before closing or opening the pool. This allows you to start the swimming season with fresh, clean water. Replacing the liner can be time-consuming, so avoid doing it during peak swimming season to maximize your swim time.

Steps to Replace a Vinyl Pool Liner

1. Order Your Supplies

Start by ordering your new pool liner. You may also need replacement faceplates, gaskets for your skimmer, new drain covers, and returns if necessary.

  • Inground Pool Liners: Custom orders require precise measurements of the liner thickness, pattern, bead type, pool shape, size, and step location.
  • Above Ground Pool Liners: Easier to order as they are typically in stock. Know your pool’s shape, size, wall height, and bead style.

2. Drain the Water

Drain the pool water safely to an area where it won’t recycle beneath the pool. Use a submersible pump to empty the pool completely. Consult a pool professional to avoid damaging the pool structure, especially if the water table is high, which can cause a “popped” pool.

3. Remove the Old Liner

Remove all faceplates, gaskets, drain covers, returns, and other fittings from the pool walls and floor. Cut the old liner into manageable sections with a razor knife, then roll up and remove from the pool. Clean and inspect the pool walls and floor, repairing any damage as needed.

4. Prep the Pool

Clean and inspect the walls and floor of the pool. Fix any floor cracks, divots, or uneven areas. Install bottom gaskets on skimmers, drains, and returns. For above ground pools, install a new liner pad and pool cove.

5. Install the New Pool Liner

The process varies slightly for inground and above ground pools but follows similar steps.

  • Inground Pools: Pull the liner over the pool with the help of 1–3 people. Use a liner vacuum or shop vacs to suction the liner to the walls and floor, removing wrinkles. Install the main drain gasket, ring, and cover once the liner is set and mostly wrinkle-free. Fill the pool, keeping the liner vac running until the water is about 6” deep in the shallow end. Install faceplates and top gaskets for skimmers and returns when the water level reaches them.
  • Above Ground Pools: Unroll the new liner inside the pool. Overlap liners should be evenly draped over the pool edge and locked in place with cover clips. Beaded liners lock into a bead receiver or track. As the pool fills, remove wrinkles by pushing them towards the walls.
